"Design is not a product feature,
it's an evolving experience!"

Good experiences are designed when the person designing them, not only understands the story, but also becomes part of it.

When asked to describe this year (just before it ends), probably the most typical thing to say about it, is that it was and still is defined by the relationships we have with the products designed by us.

Some companies have really inspired us to join their journey and invest a large amount of time learning about their field of expertise. This allowed us to become real users of our own products, live the experience, and take it with us outside of working hours, even if they are products used by professionals only.

Our goal at BRIO is to stay at the top in terms of designing experiences. As time goes by, our mindset and vision are more and more easy to prove - good experiences are designed when the person designing them, not only understands the story, but also becomes part of it. We live and breath the project.

We believe that Product Experience Design is a better term (than UX) to describe what we did this year. It is a broader term used to describe our design processes, method and approach. Users experience products through their features, interface behaviour, layouts, visuals, text, language, performance, relevancy in content, and more.

Design, Product & Dev – Brio is reaching the ultimate and most efficient product design processe (compare to previous years)

Our prediction for 2014 was: Vectors, Extended Form Elements, UXers will shift to Product Design. We are probably going to see more and more colleges, recognizing the importance of customer service and experience in academia – a business degree, even a masters or PhD, with a specialty in customer experience design will become a new offering.

More targeted gestures and possibly better use of buttons and taps. We’ll see an increasing use of iconography to help simplify and streamline designs as part of the more general trend towards flatter, simpler design.

As designers and developers embrace webfont iconography (using glyphs in a webfont instead of images), we’ll see a growth in the use of icons as they become easier to deploy. This will lead to simpler, more visual interfaces with less text.

Context – Awareness

In the past few years, products like Easilydo, Osito, and Tempo started to hit the market. While these products helped to introduce the concept of context-awareness, it wasn’t until the release of Google Now that the promise of delivering the “right information at the right time” began to take shape.

Google Now caused two shifts in the context-aware space by:
1) Providing all the right data, and 2) Taking design very seriously. Beyond the interface, context-aware computing calls for a deep examination of user behavior and complex interaction patterns. This blend of data and design is the essence of the context-aware computing trend as it relates to user experience.

HTML5, Cloud services, and iPad 2

The Cloud is enabling us to build universal user experiences – there is a better offerings and wider availability of Cloud-based services. The result: Developers and designers are now developing an appreciation and understanding that many different form factors, platforms and resolutions are out there and consuming the same data located in the cloud. The 3 factors – rising HTML5, Cloud Services and Microsoft, Apple and Android tablets – make the mobile web and hybrid mobile apps see a great rise and open millions of new opportunities in the area of User Experience and Product Design. This is a fascinating time for us.

Gestures are now a trend. Some people mix “Gestures” and “Good Design”. This is obviously very wrong. Gestures most definitely add a nice gaming flavor to the experience, but does not necessarily enhance the usability of a product. User Experience Evaluation – is listed on Wiki.

UX is not only being practiced by small to large scale companies, but also being evaluated. Tools to measure the success of UX are everywhere.

We form a definition to the process we conduct at the studio:
The design thinking process is best thought of as a system of overlapping spaces rather than a sequence of orderly steps. There are three spaces to keep in mind: inspiration, ideation, and implementation. The prototyping and testing take place within each of these steps. Testing means communicating ideas and solutions with potential users, talking to users about pain points, wishes, desires and getting feedback from them.

Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.” —Tim Brown, president and CEO at IDEO, a company we look up to.

Brio is busy learning the differences between “Enterprise Product Design” and the work with Entrepreneurs

The year is 2009, “Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle” Book by Dan Senor and Saul Singer is published. It is a book about the economy of Israel; At the time the book was written – 63 Israeli companies were listed on the NASDAQ, more than those of any other foreign country. People in the industry are already very aware of the term UX, But integrating UX and User Centered Design methodologies within the early stages of the product development – still rarely happens, and Brio is busy looking to partner with those who consider that.

Partial list of entrepreneurs and companies we partner with: Gadi Shvadron (Founder of Alljobs.com). Gadi founded Bulloons.com and together we brought the unique concept to life. At that time: Bulloons, provides financial services and information in connection with global financial markets. It analyzes financial news, expert opinions, and social media posts and presents with a sentiment rating, a positive or negative indicator showing investor sentiment about a stock. The company offers a Web application that enables to control financial sentiment, a range of opinions and ideas on stocks, markets, and industries on the Internet. In addition, it aggregates information found on the Internet into a quantifiable and measurable financial sentiment rating. Further, it offers a system that activates, manages, and monitors various information retrieval engines. It provides information on financial, consumer goods, industrial goods, basic materials, technology, conglomerates, healthcare, utilities, and services sectors.

UX is yet to be a common practice. Lots of education time is being spent.

It is about 6 months after the iPhone launch, this is a “post-PC world”. UX designers are busy designing for mobile, large-scale multi touch, gestural interfaces, physical computing, and even designing for robots. Funny enough, some web companies, are yet to understand the benefit of the UX practice being part of their product development process right from day 1.

Brio’s founder explains: “We’ve spent the last 10 years communicating the benefits of the User Experience Design practice, User Centered Design is the core of everything we do. The launch of the iPhone helps in so many ways to deliver the messages of our “campaign”.

“Brio was formed as a result of ‘me looking for the ultimate working environment’ in which tech people, entrepreneurs, product enthusiasts and designers can join forces to create winning products” – Says Noa Bichovsky. She meets designers and studios in Spain and Denmark to continue her research about UX & Product Design as a Service. The research began few years back while working at Pentagram, then at Nascent (A studio she ran and founded in Israel). 2008 is the perfect timing to form a unique team of talented designers who have similar goals in mind. Brio comes to life..

Noa Bichovsky belongs to the Avant-Garde of UX designers in Israel. As a student she introduced the UX discipline to her design school and her experience includes working for technology companies, leading design team at Pentagram Design and founding Nascent. Her work has been recognized by the American organizations: IDSA, AIGA, and the successful Japanese Design Magazine, Axis.
